Editorial Hero Shot

Casio F-91W.

A cinematic editorial of the iconic Casio F-91W — one hero centred, three ghosts floating in the void around it. The direction: elevate a $10 timepiece into a $10,000 shot using nothing but geometry, one hard key light, and disciplined negative space.

[CH. 01] — Direction

Every element on the LCD is a real segment — 24-hour readout, alarm glyphs, LAP timer, WATER RESIST — so the display holds up when a viewer leans in. The resin strap and stainless bezel are two separate PBR materials with anisotropic highlights that catch the key just enough to sell the difference in surface. The out-of-focus watches around the hero are the same asset, dolly-shifted with a physical depth of field — no post blur, no cheat.

[CH. 03] — Process

How it was made.

01
/ Reference
A week of Casio catalogue scans, real F-91W macros, and the way commercial jewellery photography arranges hero + ghosts around a centre object.
02
/ Modeling
The full watch modelled true-to-scale in Blender. Case, bezel, resin band, pusher buttons — each is a separate object so the shading language stays legible.
03
/ Display
The LCD is a high-res texture masked through a segment map, so any number combination can be dialled in without re-rendering.
04
/ Lighting
One large softbox from camera-right at 5600K, a subtle deep-blue rim behind the hero, and a very soft bounce from below. That's the entire rig.
05
/ Render
Cycles at 4K, 4096 samples, adaptive sampling + Optix denoise. Rendered in a single frame — DOF cooked in-camera to keep the ghosts feeling real.
